Why the Cortana in Halo 5 isn’t the “real” Cortana

I was able to get over the fact that Cortana is back, and evil now, by telling myself that the Cortana in Halo 5 isn’t the “real” Cortana.

Here is the proof:

1. Cortana died in Halo 4.

Frank O’Connor: “Her fate is obviously very clear at the end of Halo 4.”

“After the destruction of New Phoenix, and the death of Cortana, Master Chief must carry on.” ~ The description for Halo 4‘s epilogue

Revealing The Story Of Halo 5’s Campaign (0:00 — 0:40):

2. The following words are a reaction to criticism that Halo 5’s story got.

Brian Reed: “…the big beats of Cortana survives this thing that happens at the end of Halo 4, Cortana comes back, Cortana has this new plan that nobody is quite sure they agree with, that was all there day one.”

Frank O’Connor: “Yea.”

The Sprint – Season 3 Ep. 5 “Ship it” (6:38 — 6:50)

Which is it, Frank O’Connor?

Was Cortana’s fate “…obviously very clear at the end of Halo 4”?

Or was the fact that “…Cortana survives this thing that happens at the end of Halo 4, Cortana comes back, Cortana has this new plan that nobody is quite sure they agree with…” all there on day one?

It can’t be both.

On a side note: I love how Brian Reed describes Cortana’s death as “…this thing that happens at the end of Halo 4…”

Brian Reed: Did you not want to say that Cortana died at the end of Halo 4 because that fact exposes how bullsh*t Microsoft’s your story for Halo 5 is?

Brian Reed: I am not mad at you personally. What I’m mad at is the corporate mindset that values profit over art.

It is stories that saved my life.

What I hate is, when telling a story, it’s the almighty dollar, not an artist’s passion, that is calling the shots.

To get back on track:

3. Microsoft said that Cortana was dead.

In a video uploaded on July 29th, 2015, Microsoft’s Cortana AI said that Cortana wouldn’t be back in Halo 5 (0:30 — 0:37).

Question: “Are you in Halo 5?”

Answer: “Did you see the end of Halo 4?”

Microsoft programmed Cortana. Thus, her answers are, in a way, Microsoft’s answers.

My point is:

Something obviously happened behind-the-scenes during Halo 5‘s development in order to bring Cortana back from the dead.

I’ve heard rumors that Halo 5‘s villain was originally supposed to be Dr. Halsey, but Cortana was chosen instead because she was more “marketable.”

Regardless:

The Cortana in Halo 5 is not the Cortana that we fans know and love.

Thus, the Cortana in Halo 5 is not the “real” Cortana.
